Take a deep breath and breath slow...slowly... You are about to embark
on an adventure unlike any other that you have ever experienced. You
arrive at JFK airport at 9:00am and board United Airlines flight 8842 to
an unknown destination. As you board the flight carelessly relax in
your first class seat (please note you are not being needlessly
extravagant, but frequent flyer miles were used to upgrade). After
fully reclining, and thanking the Lord for this much needed break you
take what you thought was going to be a short nap but turns into a four
hour session of deep relaxing sleep. You awake fully rested right as
they start to serve you a four course meal, which is standard with your
first class ticket. After a short layover, you board another plane and
arrive in Stockholm, Sweden at 2:10pm.
At the airport a scheduled car service picks you up and drives you
through beautiful winding country roads, past pristine snow covered
fields, and through forests beautifully laced with recently fallen
snow. Several hours later you arrive at your destination in
JukkasjÀrvi, Sweden - The original ICE Hotel. You get out of the car
and stretch, but are quick to slip your hands into to your warm fuzzy
mittens, and to pull up the hood of your lacy winter jacket because it
is admittedly quite cold. However, a minute later you step into the ice
palace lobby and know that the cold chill of the outside is quickly
fleeting and you are warmed by the extraordinary beauty of this place.
It is decorated with beautifully carved sculptures and rays of light
reflect off of the glistening walls making it seem as if you were in
another world. The temperature on the inside is much more reasonable
and you are able to remove you coat, but prefer to keep your gloves on.
Next, the doorman shows you through the well lit hall ways to your room,
which is extraordinarily cozy, and surprisingly you are able to take off
your shoes and walk around because of the luxurious rug that you sink
into as you walk across the room. That night you sleep quite well
because of the fresh crisp air. Yet you are warm and cozy because of
your long winter underwear and the sleeping bag that they have given you.
The next day you awake and are able to go to the ice church and spend
several hours in prayer before your Lord and Savior. And your
understanding of the beauty of his creation continues to grow as you
marvel at the ornately constructed chapel. Next, you walk down the hall
and are able to enjoy the steam room and a warm shower before you return
to the ICE accomodations for lunch. That afternoon you embark on one of
the wildest adventures you have ever experienced as you snowmobile
through frozen tundras at speeds upwards of 80mph. That evening you
return exhausted ready for a fresh of steaming hot warm vanilla chai
that is waiting for you in the ICE bar. You are able to retire that
night exhausted from an exhilerating day of prayer and adventure. And
so the adventure continues....
